Why WorkFair is a gamechanger: Allyship & visible LGBTQ+ role models would encourage 80% of LGBTQ+ Gen Z to accept job offers, reveals latest survey

October 16, 2024

As autumn marks the beginning of the university recruitment season, HR/DEI leaders and talent acquisition professionals are under increasing pressure to attract and retain top talent. In today’s highly competitive job market, engaging the younger generation – particularly Gen Z – has become a strategic imperative. According to recent research by myGwork, nearly one-third of students and recent graduates identify as LGBTQ+, highlighting the importance for employers to prioritize authentic inclusion and diversity.

Authenticity Matters: Visible allies & role models are crucial

For Gen Z, authenticity is non-negotiable. The survey reveals that 80% of LGBTQ+ students and graduates are more likely to accept a job offer if they see visible allies and LGBTQ+ role models in leadership positions. Employers whose leadership teams don’t reflect the diversity of their workforce risk losing a significant talent pool.

The message is clear: authenticity is not just appreciated – it’s expected. LGBTQ+ role models and allies in visible positions are vital in making workplaces feel inclusive and welcoming. Without them, many Gen Z job seekers may walk away.

The stakes are even higher when considering workplace culture. Three-quarters of LGBTQ+ job seekers hesitate to join companies where they fear they can’t be their true selves. Gen Z demands workplaces where they feel safe from bias, discrimination, and are provided opportunities for growth.

Discrimination challenges remain

Unfortunately, discrimination is still a prevalent concern. According to the latest myGwork survey, 48% of LGBTQ+ students and graduates have witnessed discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity in their academic or work environmentscompared to just 32% of their non-LGBTQ+ peers. Additionally, 36% of LGBTQ+ respondents reported personally experiencing discrimination, such as homophobia, biphobia, or transphobia.

This underlines the urgent need for companies to take strong, proactive measures against discrimination and foster truly inclusive environments.

Corporate allyship: More than just a buzzword

Corporate allyship is no longer just a trend; it’s a crucial factor in talent retention. A notable 80% of LGBTQ+ Gen Zers say they would hesitate to join companies that have recently withdrawn their support for the LGBTQ+ community. Employers must show unwavering support for LGBTQ+ issues, both publicly and internally, to attract and retain this key demographic.

When employees see their organization making a genuine commitment to inclusion, they are more likely to feel a sense of belonging and loyalty. This, in turn, contributes to a healthier corporate culture and stronger retention rates.

Action needed now

Gen Z, especially those who identify as LGBTQ+, is defining a new era of workplace inclusivity. With nearly one-third of students and graduates identifying as LGBTQ+, companies must step up their inclusion efforts if they hope to attract and retain top talent.

Investing in visible LGBTQ+ representation, cultivating an open and accepting culture, and embracing true corporate allyship are not just beneficial – they are essential strategies in today’s competitive recruitment landscape. As Adrien and Pierre Gaubert, co-founders of myGwork, explain, “Companies that commit to visible representation and authentic environments will not only improve their corporate culture but will also gain a competitive edge in recruitment.”

WorkFair: Bridging the gap for inclusive recruitment

Recognizing the urgent need for inclusive hiring practices, myGwork launched WorkFair – a platform designed to connect inclusive employers with diverse LGBTQ+ talent. Scheduled for 13 November 2024, myGwork's fifth WorkFair addresses the critical need for companies to build truly inclusive environments.

With more than 70% of LGBTQ+ Gen Z students and graduates emphasizing the importance of being able to authentically express themselves at work, this virtual global career fair provides a direct connection to hundreds of job opportunities, career-enhancing workshops, and panels led by inspiring role models.

Participants will also have the chance to engage directly with talent scouts from some of the world’s most inclusive employers, such as Pfizer, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Discovery, Booking.com, JPMorganChase, AstraZeneca, GSK, Clifford Chance, LexisNexis, Yugo, and many more.

“WorkFair 2024 is a fantastic opportunity for LGBTQ+ students, recent graduates, and allies to apply for roles with inclusive employers, allowing them to be their true selves at work,” said Adrien and Pierre Gaubert. “Not only does the event offer real-time job opportunities, but it also provides essential career advice and guidance for thriving in their chosen fields.”

In today’s landscape, creating a truly inclusive workplace is not only a moral responsibility, but also a key strategic advantage. The future success of any organization will depend on how well they embrace this reality. WorkFair 2024 is free for LGBTQ+ students, recent graduates and allies.
