In the Year of Young People this event will give an insight into the lives and work of some of the most inspirational young people in Scotland. Alex Muir, Kirsty Stevens and Chelsea Cameron will tell their stories about overcoming adversity, raising awareness, influencing and making changes to policy and perceptions. This event will be chaired by Scottish comedian and presenter Fred MacAulay. Be prepared to be dazzled!
Alex Muir
Alex Muir is a Politics Graduate from the University of Dundee. Currently studying Fitness Health and Exercise at Dundee and Angus College. Alex is an LGBT+ activist, focusing on barriers to Healthcare and Sports for Transgender people. Alex will highlight his own journey and his work within the University of Dundee and Institute of Sport and Exercise (ISE) to try to raise awareness of the issues faced by Trans students in order to encourage more Trans people to participate in sport.
Kirsty Stevens
From debilitating illness to empowering design business Kirsty Steven, V&A Dundee’s first Design Champion, is not letting her MS stop her from achieving her goals! From her own MRI scans taken in the lead up to her diagnosis in 2007, designer Kirsty Stevens uses the shapes created by harmful lesions on her brain as source material. Under the Charcot brand Kirsty creates beautiful patterns and designs that turn this negative into an unrecognisable positive, incorporating them in high-end design. As MS is mostly an unknown and unseen condition, Kirsty aims to make it visible by printing and etching various materials, giving it impactful permanence that leads to questions about what MS is and raises MS awareness. Kirsty will talk about her experiences, her work and her determination to put a positive spin on her diagnosis.
Chelsea Cameron
Chelsea Cameron is the Young Scot Award winner 2017 and Young Scot Hero of 2017. The teenager stole the hearts of the nation when she penned a heart-breaking open letter to her drug-addicted parents who weren't around to celebrate her achievements. Her blog went viral and explained how she had to cope with their drug abuse and criminality from a young age, instead of blaming them she thanked them for showing her how not to live.
Her aim is to show other young people their potential and show them that negative situations arise in their life. Other people's choices do not determine your destiny, Chelsea Cameron hopes to continue to inspire the young people of Scotland
Fred MacAulay
Having presented the very funny and eventful MacAulay and Co. on BBC Radio Scotland for almost 18 years and with a string of tv appearances, Fred’s on air witticisms and on screen reputation are the product of years of experience on the live circuit, including a stint as the first ever-Scottish compere at the Comedy Store in London.
Arriving late to the world of stand-up comedy in the early 90’s, he has gone on to be a regular at the Edinburgh Fringe (this will be his 29th) and at comedy festivals worldwide. Appearances on many Radio 4 comedy panel shows including I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue, Just A Minute, The Unbelievable Truth and The News Quiz guarantee an audience for Fred’s Live stand-up tours.
He has successfully featured in and presented many programmes for BBC Scotland: he hosted the talk show McCoist and MacAulay and presented Life According to Fred, Hoots, Simply Fred and Scots on the Box, as well as the 2014 On The Road magazine programme with Martell Maxwell.
On national BBC Television he has been a panelist on shows includingMock the Week, QI and Have I Got News For You. In addition, in the US he was a guest on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and his performance at The Montreal Comedy Festival has been shown coast to coast in North America as well.
He lasted 7 out of 11 nights when he sang on Comic Relief Does Fame Academy. Further charity challenges saw him kayak the Caledonian Canal for Sport Relief in temperatures as low as -18 Celsius and in 2011 he scaled Mt Kilimanjaro. His West Highland Way-Hey walk was broadcast on Hogmanay 2012 on STV.
Before his comedy career took off, he studied at the University of Dundee and graduated with an MA in Accountancy and Jurisprudence. He received an honorary doctorate (LLD) from the same University in 2006 in appreciation of his time there as Rector.
