Engaging with 'Community': Issues about identity, research and access

Speakers Include:

Professor Graham Crow (University of Edinburgh)

Dr Eleanor Formby (Sheffield Hallam University)

Dr Manny Madriga (Sheffield Hallam University)

Despite often being viewed as parochial within social science and wider academic research, notions of community remain important for how (some) people live their day to day lives. Community studies and studies of particular communities help us understand how people's identity, beliefs, values, and their work, school, family, and leisure interact in context, often making use of innovative and more egalitarian research methods to appreciate people's lived experiences. This can be particularly important for understanding communities grounded in identity, especially among those considered socially disadvantaged or excluded.

This Sheffield Institute for Policy Studies event will bring researchers and the public together to explore the variety of understandings that surround community for different individuals and groups; to critique and discuss ideas about community; and to explore potential difficulties in accessing certain communities from research and policy perspectives. We are delighted that Professor Graham Crow (University of Edinburgh), author of the recent book What are community studies?, will join us to deliver a keynote on community research and act as discussant. In addition, speakers from Sheffield Hallam University include Dr Eleanor Formby and Dr Manny Madriaga. The event will prioritise perspectives from 'minority' groups including LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans) and BAME (black, Asian and minority ethnic) people. We will follow these inputs with a Q&A and discussion section where we will look to the future of community studies.

All are welcome, and tickets are free.
