Coderetreat is an all-day intensive coding event spanning five continents and 61 countries. This event celebrates the passion for software as a craft, focusing on fundamentals and design, allowing developers to practice the basic principles of modular and object-oriented design and improve their ability to write code that minimizes the cost of change over time.

This event is for anyone who idenitifies as a member of an underrepresented group in tech. That includes women, people of colour, queer and LGBT, and more. You don't need to be a coder, but you should be happy working with others as you will be pairing. You should also like focusing in on the meaning of good code.

What can you expect to get from this event?
Coderetreats are a great occasion to get out of everyday-coding and focus on learning. You have the opportunity to learn a new programming language from other coders, but also get the chance to work on your mentoring skills by showing beginners what programming in your favourite language looks like. In any case, you'll spend the whole day test-driving your implementations, an important skill to acquire in every programming language!

How does it work? The format is simple

•    Start with a programming problem
•    Work in pairs to discuss and solve the problem
•    Each round, change partners, add restrictions and examine different approaches
•    After each round, scrap your code, switch up your pairs and start over!

Breakfast and lunch will be provided courtesy of our sponsors (information coming soon). We'll email all registered participants before the event to confirm your dietary requirements.

Accessibility

The event will be held on the 2nd and 3rd floors which are both accessible by lift. Gender-neutral toilets are located on both floors. Accessible toilets are on the 2nd floor. There is currently a small step into the building for access to the lift (we are working with the landlord to get this rectified) but current students have been able to gain access and there will be someone stationed at the front door for registration. If you arrive before 9:30am, someone will be at the front entrance to greet you.
