HEN X STONEWALL HOUSING - WORKSHOP - CREATE A SAFE SPACE FOR TRANSGENDER PEOPLE

Creating a safe space for people to celebrate the Transgender people in their lives through fun activities and discussion.

AUDIENCE: Transgender people, their friends, family and partners of the community.

OUTCOMES:

• To increase awareness and increase the visibility of the importance of SOFFAS in Transgender peoples’ lives.

This event is hosted by charity Stonewall Housing, as a part of a program to educate and enhance transgender awareness during Hen, an exhibition about the UK's older transgender community by Bex Day. Taking place at Herrick Gallery from 1st to 7th April, following on from Trans Day of Visibility on March 31st.

Workshop instructors: Octavian Starr and Cat Haldane from charity Stonewall Housing

Octavian Starr - Diversity and inclusion specialist

Octavian has worked with Stonewall Housing since 2011. He is highly skilled in delivering Transgender and LGB awareness training, facilitating workshops and providing one to one support. He has valuable experience supporting vulnerable LGBT people and training both in the UK and the USA.

He has specialised in Transgender awareness for over 12 years and has a passion to encourage and support diversity and opportunity for trans people across all sectors.

Cat Haldane - Diversity and inclusion specialist

Cat has worked for Stonewall Housing for over 10 years. She began as volunteer helping young LGBT+ people into participation and group activities and worked in varied roles within the Supported Housing Team. She left her post as Housing Manager early this year to begin her new adventure as Fundraising and Initiatives Manager.

She is excited to bring her knowledge and experience in supporting transgender communities to the HEN workshops.

HEN BY BEX DAY

An exhibition about the Uk Older transgender community in the UK

Hen is an exhibition about the UK's older transgender community by Bex Day. 

Hen is an anthropological study on gender fluidity and an exploration into the lasting impact societal restrictions concerning sexual identity and gender roles have upon us. It examines how gender stereotypes have affected the older transgender community and questions how we define gender and if as a society we should, as well as exploring the inherent social and cultural problems within these alienating classifications.

The exhibition features 30 photographic portraits and a film featuring participants over the age of 40.

Hen translates in Swedish as the gender-neutral personal pronoun, the equivalent to ‘they’ in English. Transgender is an umbrella term and includes those who identify as transgender and as non-binary.

During the week, the charity Stonewall Housing (LGBT+) is hosting three workshops and a panel discussion to educate and enhance transgender awareness.

Bex Day is a fashion and documentary photographer based in London and has worked with clients including i-D Magazine (Germany and UK), British Journal of Photography, Carven, Burberry, Stella McCartney, AnOther, Topshop, Dazed and Confused, Vogue Italia, and Vice to name a few. She was nominated for the Magnum Graduate award 2016 and has lectured with Vogue Italia, Cambridge University and the Hepworth Gallery, Wakefield, and Recylart in Brussels. Hen is her first solo exhibition.
