HIV: Preparing You to Have a Supportive Conversation in the Workplace

A free online event for HR, people managers, wellbeing, D&I professionals.

Hosted by Grieg (VP of People) & Shaun Fairweather (Credit Risk Lead)

If an employee told you they had recently been diagnosed with HIV, do you know enough to be able to support them? A lunchtime chat with HIV Specialist Registrar, Dr Luke Cannon, raising awareness and funds for the HIV charity, George House Trust.

Many of you may remember, Queer as Folk, when it was broadcast back on C4 back in 1999 which was ground-breaking and controversial for its time. More recently C4 also showed ‘It’s A Sin’. These programmes have shown us just how much times and society has changed and matured. Society was able to mature because of these. The drama provided the education, that drove the change.

We know that employers want to create an inclusive workplace for everyone.

A FREE ONLINE EVENT FOR HR, PEOPLE MANAGERS, WELLBEING, D&I PROFESSIONALS.

Did you know?

- 80% of the population think it is false or do not know that HIV cannot be passed on by someone living with HIV on effective treatment

- Only 32% of the public say they would feel comfortable working with someone living with HIV

- Nearly 2 in 5 people think their employer should tell them if a colleague as HIV

- Only 17% of people living with HIV share their status outside of the immediate social network, such as neighbours or co-workers.

The event is designed to help you and your co-workers have a greater understanding of HIV, treatment & medication, to assist you in having better conversations with your colleagues.

In HR, we're frequently asked, 'Can I have a word / have you got five minutes?'

You always wonder as you walk towards a meeting room ( or the Teams Call!) “I wonder what this is about? or as your head fills with dread, “what’s happened or gone wrong now?” It’s like A&E, you just know what’s going to be put in front of you sometimes.

5/10 mins in, the conversation fumbles over the darker shades of grey. Your colleague just starts to explain to you why they’ve been off and talk you through what that Doctors note really meant. Can you imagine, how it would make someone feel if you were confident and had enough knowledge, to say, “It's ok, you’re going to be fine”

Leading the presentation and providing expert advice, is HIV specialist Registrar, Dr Luke Cannon.

Dr Cannon will be providing a Q&A at the end of the session, please feel free to submit any questions in advance.

Shaun and Grieg have pulled this call together to raise funds for George House Trust and help their colleagues have better-prepared conversations in the workplace. “It’s a Sin” did an amazing job bring these conversations into our living rooms and households, but this is where the journey begins. We can all make a difference.

The event is free however at the end of the talk we will be raising awareness and funds for the amazing work that George House Trust does. Any donations from you or your employer really would be appreciated and make a difference.
