On Wednesday 19th February 2020 the Human Rights Implementation Centre will welcome Jonathan Cooper, Fellow of the Centre, to present a seminar called 'Policing Desire: LGBT+ Persecution in the UK, 1970 to 2000'.

Despite partial decriminalisation of consensual sex between men in 1967, thousands of gay men were arrested over the following decades. No laws protected gay or lesbian people. The law refused to recognise trans people. Bisexuals didn’t exist. Law was used against LGBT people. It was only through the Human Rights Act 1998 and EU law that LGBT people in the UK began to carve out rights.

At this celebratory event of LGBT+ identity and equality, using video, newspapers reports, music, art and court cases, the LGBT community’s journey from persecution to tolerance, tolerance to acceptance and acceptance to equality will be mapped.
