LGBTQ Tour of the Met Museum Spotlights Art Uniquely Ours - 4pm Tour

OUT PROFESSIONALS INVITES YOU TO ENJOY AN EYE-OPENING PRIVATE TOUR OF THE MET WITH PROFESSOR ANDREW LEAR.

TICKETS

Encore! On Saturday, January 25, Out Professionals offers OP Members and friends “Secrets of the Met,” a private tour of homoerotic treasures from the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, conducted by Professor Andrew Lear.

This registration is for the 4pm tour. You may also register for the 1pm tour.

This OP tour explores some of the Met's choicest homoerotica, from ancient Greek nudes and erotic vase-painting to works from the Renaissance and the present day, many expressing same-gender desire. Famous artists and subjects appear, but so do lesser-known artists and works whose homoerotic charge is often ignored, including phallic totems from the Met’s Oceania collection.

For Lear’s insights on just one of the works included in our tour, visit The Gay and Lesbian Review.

Professor Andrew Lear has taught art history and Classics at Harvard, Columbia, and NYU. Lear is the founder of Oscar Wilde Tours, the first company to offer tours focused on LGBT history, and the winner of the Travel Industry’s 2016 Travvy Award for best-escorted tour operator, LGBT; and of the Luxury Travel Guide’s 2016 award, LGBT Tour Operator of the Year.

ON THE TOUR - PHOTOS > Near “Portrait of a German Officer” (above right), a monumental painting by Marsden Hartley memorializing his lover, who died at 24, is a detail of “Gertrude Stein” (above left), a central figure in the Parisian art world, as painted by Pablo Picasso. And then there’s Antinous (center), a Roman Emperor's lover who went on to become a god after his mysterious death at age 18.

Limited to 20 persons, today's tour departs promptly at 4 p.m. and lasts approximately two hours. Your Out Professionals ticket includes admission to the Met’s galleries, cafe and store until 9 p.m. “Secrets of the Met" is not an official Met offering.
