LIKE A GAY ICON: from Madonna to Bowie, a panel discussion exploring the power of the pop diva.
Why are pop divas so crucial for the gay community? And why is it important to create a queer history of popular music? Gay icons have long been innovators and trailblazers, providing the soundtrack to coming out, breaking up and getting down.
LUCY O’BRIEN, author of Madonna: Like An Icon, chairs this panel with MATT CAIN, novelist and former editor-in-chief of Attitude, and writer/blogger DARRYL W. BULLOCK. They will be exploring these questions and more, and playing extracts from iconic tracks.
Lucy’s fully revised and updated biography is published this summer to coincide with Madonna’s 60th (yes 60th!) birthday, while Matt’s new novel The Madonna of Bolton is about growing up gay in a northern town (described as “Billy Elliot meets Beautiful Thing wearing a conical bra”). Darryl’s book David Bowie Made Me Gay investigates 100 years of LGBT music, from the Pansy Craze of jazz jive to the dark days of Stonewall, to being out and proud in the 21st century.
