What is transgender/trans and how does it relate to my workplace?

These are just some questions that we will address in this session.

In recent times trans people have been ever present in the media but many people still don’t understand what transgender is and can hold stereotypical views. These views can affect how we recruit, train and retain staff, and influence customer service.

With this seminar we are providing an introduction into this area, looking at what gender identity means in 2020 for our workplaces and our people and how job adverts can have coded language which can impact on applicants. We explore what trans mean, what it is like to be a trans individual in the workplace and how this relates to the Equality Act.

It will give practical steps to understand and support trans individuals.

SPEAKER

Jake is a passionate campaigner for human rights specialising in LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender). Jake started his career during university by establishing 3 LGBT charities in York and North Yorkshire. Jake campaigned for same sex marriage in the UK and Republic of Ireland, the official pardon of individuals who were convicted under the old act (before partial decriminalisation) and advancing transgender rights just to name a few. Jake has represented LGBT peoples’ experiences to the Government Equalities Office. Being inspired by all this experience Jake established his own business, Diversity Enterprises, to share his knowledge on LGBT+ people’s issues and experiences.

This is a free event for CIPD Members and Non-Members, including Business Owners/Managers. Early booking recommended.

We do reserve the right to charge a £10 no-show fee for anyone booking who is unable to attend who does not contact us with apologies (except in exceptional circumstances).

All of our branch events are organised by volunteers who give up their time freely to provide CPD opportunities for others in North Yorkshire, events are funded through branch funds, and our speakers (who at most receive expenses only) give up their time freely to prepare and present their sessions. With this in mind, if you do book on an event and find you’re no longer able to attend – please email [email protected] and give your apologies to those involved with the event – we really do appreciate this, especially in advance where possible as this might allow us to avoid catering wasteage, but if it’s an unavoidable last minute cancellation we’d still like to hear from you.
