The Virginia Beach Police Department, in partnership with Hampton Roads PRIDE and the Hampton Roads LGBTQ Public Safety Consortium, will be hosting a training event focused on increasing the effectiveness of emergency services when responding to the LGBTQ community. Subject matter experts will be providing current and relevant training topics to first responders, including Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS, and Emergency Dispatchers. The training topics will focus on better response to needs specific to the LGBTQ community in a variety of situations, and we will highlight ways government services, specifically emergency first responders, can better serve and build relationships with the LGBTQ community. Finally, we will explore ways to integrate the various resources available for the LGBTQ community and how First Responders can work within these resources to enhance their services.

Topics will include:

Fair and Impartial Policing – An overview of a nationally recognized program in which we will explore implicit bias, the need for agencies to identify these barriers, and how to collaborate with the LGBTQ community to increase effective response.

Transgender Issues – Unconditional Respect – Experts will identify issues specific to the transgender community, and how to work together to build mutual respect and cooperation.

Same Sex Intimate Partner Violence/Community Resources - Leading community victim advocates will explore the similarities, and more importantly, the difference between traditional domestic violence response versus same sex intimate partner violence, and the implementation of community resources.

Gay/Straight Alliances – Youth Outreach - Public Safety Liaisons will highlight their work with Gay/Straight Alliance programs within various schools, and the importance of youth outreach for public safety agencies.

Organizational Culture and Benefits of Liaisons – Executives will discuss the importance of creating organizational culture that reflects inclusion and diversity in the workplace, and the positive impact of implementing a liaison program.

Panel Discussion - Leaders in Public Safety, Community Outreach, and local Government will discuss current topics associated with the benefits and hurdles in changing organizational culture and collaborating with the LGBTQ community, and answer questions from workshop attendees.
