Feedback has been described as the 'oxygen of champions' as it is considered essential by athletes for enhancing and growing their performance. Feebdack is also sometimes referred to as a 'gift' that should be welcomed by the receiver, who should feel grateful to the giver for their generosity. However...feedback is not always offered or received in a manner condusive to learning or development. We all face feedback somewhere in the course of our daily lives - be it as the dreaded 'red pen' on an assignment, words of advice or encouragement from a colleague or as a reaction to our performance from a manager or senior colleaugue.

Effective feedback does undoubtedly enhance performance, but there is most definitely an art to the giving and receiving of such potentially sensitive communication. Whilst it may not come naturally, crafting feedback and knowing how to hear and accept feedback when it is offerd are skills that can be practiced and developed.
