Research has consistently shown that disabled LGBT+ persons are marginalised and stigmatised, and that there is misunderstanding with regards to their identities. However, research often fails to centralise the experiences of disabled persons, particularly those who are young. As a result, such voices are often missing from research.

Dr Alex Toft will explore the findings from ongoing research which seeks to understand the lived experiences of young people (16-25) who identify as disabled and LGBT+.

Particular attention will be paid to misconceptions surrounding sexuality and disability, negotiations of identity, and what the young people’s experiences tell us about constructions of disability and sexuality. Throughout, the voices of young people are foregrounded.

Dr Toft will highlight the key messages emerging from the research and take you on a tour through the history of the project, from origins and inspiration through to implementation, findings and future possibilities.
